In September 2021, DFM’s Head of Strategic Investment and Head of Manager Research, Jennifer Henry, chats to local asset managers about how they fit ESG into their portfolios and the trends they are seeing, as well as how they promote the United Nations Sustainable Developmental Goals across the companies they analyse.

 

The session will be hosted by Thobile Finca and feature Portfolio Managers, Bronwyn Blood from Granate Asset Management, Unathi Loos from Ninety One and Lisa Haakman from Coronation.

 

Jennifer, who is also the President at CFA Society South Africa, will also take a look at the degree of gender transformation in South African asset management.

About the webinar

This webinar will give insights and learnings on how fund managers incorporate ESG and Responsible Investing in their investment fundamental analysis and valuations of companies across industrial, financial, and resource companies. We will also discuss the usefulness of the sustainability of these companies and what new trends these portfolio managers are seeing in these reports.

 

We will tie this into the United Nations Sustainable Developmental Goals (SDGs) and whether portfolio managers weigh in on the Corporate Social Responsibility of companies that they wish to invest in. Regarding the SDGs, we will hone in on SDG 5 and 8 which speaks to gender equality and promotion of sustained, inclusive economic growth. You can expect to learn more about:

Thobile joined STANLIB’s Multi-Manager team in 2011 as a technical marketing assistance focussing on positioning and marketing the business’s Retail and Institutional propositions. Her role has since evolved along with the growth of STANLIB Multi-Manager as a business. Having performed the role of an Investment Specialist for Standard Bank Wealth & Investments (W&I) model portfolios, Standard Bank Financial Consultancy (SBFC) traditional CIS range, and most recently the STANLIB Multi-Manager Private Markets funds. In April 2021 Thobile was appointed as the DFM: Senior Product Specialist responsible for driving the DFM product proposition and oversee DFM proposition governance.

Jennifer joined STANLIB Multi-Manager in 2014 from Standard Bank Group Securities where she was an Equity Analyst, highly rated in covering Media, Electronic and IT stocks for several years. She joined the EXCO of STANLIB Multi-Manager in 2016, driving people and culture initiatives within the business. As of 2017, she headed up the portfolio management for retail clients within Multi-Manager. At the end of 2019, Jennifer took up of the role of Head of Strategic Investments and Manager Research, which includes overseeing the portfolio management of Liberty’s Alternative asset portfolios. In addition to being a CFA charterholder and a certified Financial Risk Manager, Jennifer is also a board member of the CFA Society of South Africa, and has been elected as president of the society effective 1 September 2021. Jennifer is passionate about ethical investment leadership, investment education and diversity. Her passions, background and current role within the group, makes her well-placed to be the lead Portfolio Manager for the African Women Leadership Fund (AWLF) Initiative. She is also thrilled by the progress made by SMM’s DFM team, and its been wonderful researching and working with fund managers in putting together these solutions. As a self-appointed gender-parity champion, Jennifer is excited to host a fantastic line up of women portfolio managers who are part of these DFM solutions.

Prior to joining Granate in December 2015, Bronwyn was the Portfolio Manager of the Flexible Fixed Interest funds and the flagship Absolute Yield Fund at Cadiz Asset Management. She took over the management of the Flexible Fixed Interest funds when Cadiz bought African Harvest in 2006 and managed the Absolute Yield Fund from 2007. Bronwyn is the Portfolio Manager for Granate’s Multi Income strategy and is a co-Portfolio Manager on the Granate SCI Balanced Fund.

Ninety One

Unathi is a portfolio manager for the Ninety One Balanced and General Equity Strategy within the SA 4Factor team. She also has co-portfolio management responsibilities for the South African Resources Strategy. As sector head of Resources she is responsible for driving the research agenda within this sector with specific research responsibilities for a number of large cap mining companies. Unathi joined the firm from Investec’s Private Bank division, where she was an internal and external consultant covering credit applications and loan agreements.

She graduated cum laude from the University of Cape Town with a Master of Business Administration degree. Unathi is also a CFA® Charterholder.

Coronation

Lisa is an equity analyst in the Global Emerging Markets investment unit and co-manager of the Coronation Global Emerging Markets Flexible unit trust fund. She joined from PSG Asset Management and has 14 years’ investment experience, including positions as a sell-side analyst and in private equity.
